π± Wilmington Pride Event + Mosquito Days Increase

- Hi-Wire Brewing and Varnish Nightclub have come together to host a benefit for the LGBTQ Center of Cape Fear Coast in honor of LGBTQ Pride Month this June. The event included a local crafts market, food, group events, and a drag show. Said local attendee Laurie Morin, "In this political climate, I think it's really important for members of our community to come out and support each other and plus our community really knows how to party." - The organization Climate Central, in a recent analysis, has found Wilmington had 11 more "mosquito days" β totaling 221 β in 2022 than compared to 1979. Per the organization, a "mosquito day" is defined as having an average relative humidity of 42 percent% or higher, and daily minimum and maximum temperatures between 50-95 degrees Fahrenheit. Overall, the study found that 71 percent of the 242 local areas analyzed in the US have had annual mosquito days increase by 16 days on average. New Hanover County is home to more than 40 species of mosquito, and the increase of non-native mosquitos in recent years is slated to continue with changes in the climate. (StarNewsOnline.com)
- Wilmington Deputy City Manager Mary Vigue has been charged with a DWI as a result of a Jun. 1 traffic stop. Per the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, a checkpoint conducted with Wilmington Police along East Lake Shore Drive as part of the Governor's Traffic Safety Program was the site where Vigue was stopped at around 3 p.m., Thursday. Reportedly, officers on the scene smelled alcohol and asked Vigue to step out of the vehicle to conduct a sobriety check, which Vigue failed. Vigue was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, and Driving with Expired Registration; she has been given an unsecured bond and released. (Carolinacoastonline)
