Here are the top three stories today in Winston-Salem:
- The City of Winston-Salem is planning to receive $5 million in federal funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to go toward housing construction costs. The supplemental grants were announced on Tuesday, and Winston-Salem was the only city in North Carolina to receive the federal grant. City officials said that the grant money is intended to help offset construction costs related to supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic. (WXII12 Winston-Salem)
- The River Run International Film Festival is returning to Winston-Salem this week starting Thursday, Apr. 13, and will run through Saturday, Apr. 22. The 10-day festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary and is considered to be one of the fastest-growing regional film festivals in the country. Visit Winston-Salem President Richard Geiger said of the festival, "River Run just continues to elevate the profile of Winston-Salem as a community rich in art, culture, theater, and festival life." (WXII12 Winston-Salem)
- Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is looking for parents and guardians of students in the district to serve as volunteers on the new Superintendent's Parent and Guardian Advisory Council. Superintendent Tricia McManus said of the new initiative, "This diverse group representing all parts of our city and county will meet quarterly to discuss issues that impact our students and allow you to participate in the decision-making process." The 50 volunteers will serve for one year starting in mid-May, and applications are currently open online through Apr. 14. (WFDD)
