COLUMBUS, OH — A Columbus police officer has been indicted for murder following an officer-involved shooting.

Officer Adam Coy was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. He faces charges of murder, felonious assault, and two counts of dereliction of duty for his role in the shooting of Andre Hill, 47, a Black man.

Coy was taken into custody this week and will remain in custody while awaiting arraignment. He will not plead guilty to the charges, his attorney told the Associated Press.

On Dec. 22, 2020, Coy was sent to investigate a suspicious car outside a home on Oberlin Drive. While outside the house, Hill came out of a garage, holding a cell phone. Coy pulled out his gun and shot Hill four times, body camera footage showed.

Police officers on the scene, including Coy, did not provide first aid to Hill. He died from his injuries, prosecutors said.

“In this case, the citizens of Franklin County, represented by the individual grand jurors, found probable cause to believe that Mr. Coy committed a crime when he killed Andre Hill by gunfire,” Attorney General Dave Yost said at a news conference Wednesday night.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) was asked to investigate the shooting. The team collected several strands of evidence, including body-camera footage, witness testimony, and cyber data. The report does not determine who was at fault in the shooting, but does lay out all of the collected evidence.
