• New AI system takes Akron's non-emergency calls (spectrumnews1.com) — Akron’s 911 dispatch center has rolled out an AI assistant named Ava to handle non-emergency calls, aiming to cut wait times and keep emergency lines clear. The system, launched Dec. 15, already fields and routes thousands of calls, supports human dispatchers, and won’t replace their jobs. Residents can still reach the non-emergency line at 330-375-2181.
   

• University of Akron announces deal to privatize dorms (cleveland.com) — A major housing shakeup is coming to the University of Akron, as the school has signed a 50-year deal with PRG - Akron Properties to take over management of all on-campus dorms. The agreement brings a $91.6 million upfront payment to pay down debt and more than $50 million in residence hall upgrades planned between spring 2026 and summer 2027.
   

• Tallmadge man found not guilty by reason of insanity for father's death (wkyc.com) — A Tallmadge man has been found not guilty by reason of insanity in the shooting death of his father, who was taken to Akron City Hospital and later pronounced dead. A Summit County judge will keep lifetime jurisdiction while doctors decide whether he’s hospitalized or otherwise institutionalized, following a detailed psychological evaluation that found he did not understand the wrongfulness of his actions.
