11 Projects Look To Improve Community Health In Lorain County
Lorain County Public Health awarded grants to 11 projects aimed at boosting health locally.
AVON LAKE, OH — Lorain County Public Health awarded 11 grants, worth a collective total of $50,000, to improve community health and partnerships.
“We received over 20 applications requesting over $200,000 in funding for the community grants,” said David Covell, public health commissioner. “We’re grateful to be able to provide these opportunities for our community members.”
Grant winners will work through the summer and fall of 2021 to complete their projects. They will report their successes to the public health department.

The 11 grant recipients are:
- THRIVE! Southern Lorain County will install pickleball courts in the Village of Wellington.
- El Centro de Servicios Sociales, Inc. will support Tomando Control de su Salud, a chronic disease prevention program.
- Amherst Exempted Village School District will make playground improvements.
- Horizon Education Centers will add lighting around shared-use paths at its Elyria and Lorain sites.
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lorain County will support hybrid models of Effective Leadership Academy (ELA) in after-school programs.
- A Dementia Friendly LIFE will create a Memory Cafe in North Ridgeville.
- Kendal at Oberlin - Early Learning Center will support Conscious Discipline programming for early childcare providers and parents.
- LaGrange Township will make walking trail improvements.
- Village of Wellington will make park improvements.
- Hopes for Future will establish community-supported agriculture in Lorain.
- Amherst Township will complete playground upgrades and improvements.
