1st Avon Lake Ozone Garden To Be Dedicated In October
The first-of-its-kind garden will help monitor ground ozone in northern Ohio.

AVON LAKE, OH — The Ozone Garden at Avon Lake Public Library will be dedicated on Oct. 14.
The Ozone Garden is the only Ohio garden that is part of the International Ozone Garden Network, which monitors ground ozone. The garden was made possible by a grant from Harvard University and the Smithsonian and was coordinated by the Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club.
“The City of Avon Lake applauds the efforts of these three groups for taking part in this endeavor to monitor the condition of our atmosphere,” Greg Zilka, Mayor. The Ozone Garden is an amazing educational tool for all ages, near and far, that was spearheaded by Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club member, Councilwoman Jennifer Fenderbosch.

Johnson's classes will collect data from the garden to help NASA monitor air quality. The National Center for Atmospheric Research will then interpret the data, with help from the Smithsonian, Harvard and other universities.
The Avon Lake Public Library's Children's Department will also host an informational kiosk to teach children about ground ozone and its impact on the health of humans, plants and animals.
In November 2023, NASA will launch the Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring Pollution satellite. It will be the first space-based instrument to monitor major air pollutants across the continent.
