Final: Avon Lake Earns 'Excellent with Distinction' Honors on State Report Card
District earns highest possible grade after state releases final numbers.

For the 10th straight year, the Avon Lake School District has earned an “excellent” rating from the state. It is also the second year in a row the district earned "With Distiction," according to final numbers issued by the Ohio Department of Education. (Preliminary numbers for the 2012-13 year should be out in the fall.)
"I'm very proud of our students and staff. The OAAs and OGTs are one measure that we use for student academic progress and how our schools are meeting student needs," Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said. "We're doing well on those measures is a testimony to the hard work put in by all involved."
Scott said the PI (performance index) is the measure that is most valuable to the district.

"Avon Lake City School District believes that the State tests are a minimum expectation. The performance index is based on the percentage of students who score Advanced or Accelerated on the assessments. This fits well with our goal of having a Pre-K to 12th grade system of educational opportunities that prepares all students for college or a career. High expectations and a rigorous curriculum take all students well beyond what can be measured by a single test."
The distict missed meeting "met" for AYP – Adequate Yearly Progress, part of the No Child Left Behind program.

"We are 'not met' due the percentage of our students who are on an IEP passing rate," Scott said. "This sub group does very well, but our passing rate is now so high that it is difficult to reach the level that is needed to be 'met.' We will continue to work on the issues, but are not going to focus on it with students on an IEP to the detriment of the student."
To meet an indicator, the district must meet a minimal 75 percent.
