Avon Lake’s Population Increases by 25 Percent

Official count is slightly lower than Bureau's 2009 estimate.

Avon Lake’s official 2010 U.S. Census Bureau count puts the city’s official population at 22,581, an almost 25 percent increase over the last decennial census count completed in 2000. That survey listed Avon Lake’s population at 18,145.

The city’s official 2010 count, released March 9, came in slightly lower than the American Community Survey’s (ACS) , released last December. The ACS’s 2009 five-year estimate, released by the Census Bureau, listed Avon Lake’s population as 23,464.

Avon Lake remains overwhelmingly white. In 2000, 97.3 percent of the population was white. That number decreased slightly in 2010 to 95.7 percent.

The city’s demographics also indicate the ratio of adults has increased. In 2000 71 percent of the city’s population was over the age of 18. That percentage increased to 73 percent in 2010.

The 2010 Census was a head count of every man, woman and child in the United States on April 1, 2010. Information collected included age, gender, address and ethnicity. Data indicates that with the exception of an increased population, Avon Lake’s demographics are largely unchanged.
