Avon Lake Accepts $250,000 Settlement to Repair 191 Windows
After almost 13 years, agreement reached on leaky Safety Center windows.
A 12-year-old complaint pitting the city of Avon Lake against Spaulding Construction for faulty work at the Avon Lake Safety Center has been settled, with Avon Lake accepting a $250,000 settlement in relation to windows at the Safety Center.
The center houses the Avon Lake Police Department and the Avon Lake Municipal Court.
In early 2001, soon after the Safety Center was completed, water began pouring in to the building causing damage. In 2006, the city filed suit against Spaulding’s insurance company.

“Now we’ll be able to fix that building and problems incurred,” Zilka said.
The city settled with the contractor’s insurance company. The issue has been addressed in both the Rob Berner and K.C. Zuber administrations.
City Engineer Joe Reitz said the money will go to repairs.
“We have 191 windows at the safety center that will need to be repaired with the money,” Reitz said. “I am having several repaired to determine what we will do for the rest and I will need to send this project our for bids once we are sure the proposed fix will work.”
