Here are the top three stories in Avon-Avon Lake today:
- Doing good for the entire community, including the wildlife, the Avon Lake Police Department responded to a call on Thursday in reference to an eagle with a possible broken wing. According to the ALPD's Facebook page, "The eagle was located in the wooded area behind the United Church of Christ. Officers responded and, with the help of a retired ODNR Officer, they were able to safely capture the adult eagle and transport it to the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center where the staff was pleased to report that the eagle’s wing was merely twisted. They speculate that this may have happened as a result of flying into a fence. The LENSC will hold the eagle for a week or two for observation. After a clean bill of health, per the experts, the eagle will be returned to the location where it was found." (Avon Lake Police Department via Facebook)
- Avon Lake Police Department asked on their Facebook page, "Have you started cleaning out your medicine cabinets for the National Rx takeback? We will be in our lobby [today] from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to collect your unneeded/expired meds. While you're doing that, check your cupboards for some other stuff you can bring in while dropping off meds for safe disposal. Do you have an extra can of corn or box of stuffing you can donate to our CRS holiday food drive? Or a spare box of tissues, bottle of dish soap, or reusable shopping bags for Lorain County Safe Harbor/Genesis house? Our holiday collection bins for Avon/Avon Lake Community Resource Services & Lorain County Safe Harbor / Genesis House are also located in our lobby 24/7 if you are fortunate enough to be able to give. If you can't make it in tomorrow; we have Rx and sharps disposal bins available in our lobby 24/7. Our holiday collection drives are running through the end of November." - Looking to add to your family and have a positive impact on the Avon-Avon Lake community at the same time? Consider adopting a pet from a local shelter or organization. Many shelters in and around Avon-Avon Lake are still working to find forever homes for dozens of cats, dogs and other adorable critters coming through. Millions of pets and other companion animals are taken in each year by shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, only around half of all shelter pets are adopted each year, according to ASPCA data. Looking to adopt a new family member? A great place to begin your search is at Love A Stray, where Celia the cat is waiting patiently, or another local adoption agency. If you aren't sure if you have time to take care of a pet year round, many shelters also offer opportunities to foster pets until they are placed. Need some help in your search? Patch and Petfinder have you covered. We've compiled this week’s list of pets available for adoption near you. If you're a cat person, meet Tallulah, a Domestic Short Hair up for adoption. Or if dogs are more your thing, there are several great dogs available, too.(Avon-Avon Lake Patch)
