Here are the top three stories today in Avon-Avon Lake:

  1. Changing the lives of children through golf, Avon Fields Golf Course's Ron Dumas will receive the NAACP Cincinnati Chapter’s President’s Award. According to The First Call, "Dumas will receive his award on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Duke Energy Convention Center. The President’s Award is the highest honor given at the local branch level that is chosen by the branch president to recognize an individual that has been a pillar of the organization for their individual sacrifice and overall impact. Dumas is the current assistant teaching professional at Avon Fields and has been a PGA professional since 1998. Just prior to becoming certified by the PGA of America, Dumas founded the Reaching Out For Kids (ROFK) program in order to teach life lessons and help direct young lives in need. The program is free of charge for its participants and is held at Avon Fields Golf Course with 200 - 300 kids involved annually." Congratulations Ron!(The First Call)
  2. According to WLWT Cincinnati, "the former bookkeeper of My Sister’s House, a now-shuttered domestic violence shelter was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to 12 months in prison for crimes related to stealing funds from the shelter. Jaime Cardinal, 46, of Washington Court House, was arrested in July 2020. According to officials, Cardinal spent tens of thousands of dollars intended for the operation of the shelter on personal expenses, including food, a trip to Disney World and Universal Studios for her daughter, as well as thousands of dollars in purchases from Avon, Thirty-One and iTunes. Between January 2014 and October 2016, Cardinal and a co-conspirator misused debit cards connected to the shelter’s bank accounts to make hundreds of personal purchases at restaurants and auctions, among other places." (WLWT Cincinnati)
  3. Is knitting your passion? Then you are in luck! Knitting lovers can bring their projects to the Avon Lake Public Library on October 7 and enjoy the company of fellow needlework hobbyists at 7 p.m. According to cleveland.com, "presenter Valerie Dillard will also be available to answer questions and offer assistance.
