High School Football Playoffs Start: Who Avon, Avon Lake Play

Both Avon High and Avon Lake High have made the postseason. Who will they play and when?

AVON, OH — Avon High School and Avon Lake High School will both host postseason football games this Friday night.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) announced first-round playoff pairings, with higher-ranked seeds getting a home game. Avon finished the year as the No. 2 team in Division II, Region 6. Avon Lake was No. 5 in the same region.

The 8-2 Eagles will host St. Francis de Sales from Toledo on Friday, while Avon Lake will see St. John's Jesuit, also from Toledo, come to town.

All Division I, Division II, and Division III first-round playoff games will be played on Friday night. Lower divisions will play Saturday. Kick-off time for the Friday contest is 7 p.m.

Here's the entire first-round playoff pairing for Region 6:

  • No. 15 Toledo Waite at No. 1 Medina Highland
  • No. 15 Toledo St. Francis de Sales at No. 2 Avon
  • No. 15 Lakewood at No. 3 Barberton
  • No. 13 North Olmsted at No. 4 Toledo Central Catholic
  • No. 12 Toledo St. John's Jesuit at No. 5 Avon Lake
  • No. 11 Parma Heights Valley Forge at No. 6 Olmsted Falls
  • No. 10 North Royalton at No. 7 Fremont ROss
  • No. 9 Cleveland Rhodes at No. 8 Whitehouse Anthony Wayne

Avon historical perspective: The Eagles have made 14 appearances in the OHSAA football playoffs, the most recent being in 2020. The team has a 26-14 overall record in those years. The most successful postseason for the Eagles was in 2011, when the team was state runner-up for Division II.

Avon Lake historical perspective: The Shoremen have made 22 postseason appearances. They're 28-21 all-time in the playoffs, including a 2003 state championship win and a 2004 runner-up performance in Division II.
