Here are the top three stories today in Avon-Avon Lake:

  1. Want to add a new member to your family and give back to the Avon-Avon Lake community at the same time? Consider adopting a pet from a local shelter. Local shelters in and around Avon-Avon Lake have dogs, cats and other pets ready and waiting to be adopted.
Millions of pets and other companion animals are given to adoption facilities each year nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Shelters often look after other animals in search of a permanent home as well, including pigs, birds and even horses. 2. The fifth annual fundraiser for the Alivia Margarette Agosto Memorial Scholarship Fund will be a Luau for Livi event held on October 8 at the St. Joseph Parish Center. According to cleveland.com, "Alivia passed away at the age of 13 on May 22, 2017. Through their grief, Pete and Teresa Agosto, Alivia’s parents, established a scholarship fund in her memory. Their goal was to assist students who wished to pursue their Catholic education, as well as support teachers in Catholic schools. St. Joseph Catholic School and Elyria Catholic High School (Alivia’s intended high school) are the direct recipients of the fundraising efforts. This year’s event will be catered by Taste of Excellence and will feature live music and a presentation of Polynesian dancers. Cost is $40 per person and includes appetizers, dinner, desserts and unlimited beer and wine. From 2018 to 2021, nearly $64,000 has been raised for the scholarship fund, enabling the fund committee to distribute over $52,000 in grants. For more information, contact Kimberly Finn, fundraising coordinator, at 216-288-0240 or email finn_amamsf@yahoo.com. For information on the scholarship fund, go to aliviaagosto.org." (cleveland.com)
  3. The Wilbur Cahoon House Museum is now open! Beginning Sunday, October 2, the house will be open for guided tours on Sundays from 1 - 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. We hope to see you there! According to the city of Avon's website, "the home of Wilbur Cahoon and his family, Avon's first settlers, is located at 2940 Stoney Ridge Road. On September 14, 1814 the Cahoon family of nine, soon to be ten, settled on 800 acres of land after moving from Salisbury, New York. Their mission was to build a sawmill and grist mill to start a new settlement. The original Cahoon family log cabin was built just south of the current home's location, near the place where Stoney Ridge Road crosses over the French Creek. Construction of the historic 12-room Greek Revival style home began in 1825 and the home was placed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places in 1978." (City of Avon)
