U.S Census 2010 figures for Avon released today

Avon's population almost doubled and became more diverse over the last 10 years, according to the 2010 U.S. Census figures released today.

The population of Avon in the 2010 Census figures is 21,193, compared to 11,446 in 2000.

In 2000, there were 82 people identified as black or African-American in Avon. In 2010, there were 480. The multiracial population grew from 93 to 302 over those 10 years. Hispanics grew from 147 in 200 to 711 in 2010.

The city's growth helped keep Lorain County from losing residents. Lorain County grew from 284,664 in 2000 to 301,356 in 2010.
