  1. According to the Chronicle, "based on complete but unofficial results from the Lorain County Board of Elections, Avon Lake’s Issue 20 failed 7,245 to 4,777 votes. Issue 20 was an income tax increase of 0.25 percent to raise funds to pay for a new fire station. Mayor Greg Zilka was disappointed by the result of the vote, but he said that the feelings of the constituents had been made obvious. “Certainly the residents have spoken and they have spoken very clearly. That was quite a thumping we took on this,” Zilka said. Avon Lake’s current fire station was constructed in 1978. Zilka said its age, combined with an increase in both city population and call volume, creates problems for the fire department. But any plans for a new station will now have to be pushed back, probably several years, as the city will instead focus on more pressing infrastructure concerns, Zilka said. ” (The Chronicle)
  2. The Avon on the Lake Garden Club has been busy this year helping to preserve the monarch population by rescuing the butterfly eggs that are found on plants such as milkweed. Once the eggs are found, the club members set up a monarch sanctuary in their homes to watch the stages occur. Once the butterflies become adults and “hatch,” they are released back into nature within a few hours of hatching. This year, the club has released more than 253 monarchs and a total of 493 over the past two years. The community is invited to tag a butterfly next spring (cost is $15). Go to MonarchWatch.org. 3. Do you want to add to your family and make a positive impact on the world at the same time? Perhaps it's finally time to adopt a pet! Many shelters in and around Avon-Avon Lake are still working to fulfill adoptions. Millions of pets and other companion animals are surrendered to adoption facilities each year nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, only half of all shelter animals — about 3.2 million — are adopted each year, ASPCA data shows. This means millions of animals — some right here in the Avon-Avon Lake area — are still waiting for their forever homes. With help from our friends at Petfinder, Patch has compiled this week’s list of animals available for adoption near you. Whether you’re looking for cuddles or companionship, one of these animals could be the perfect fit for your family. (Avon-Avon Lake Patch)
