- In light of recent happenings, Avon Lake Fire Chief Jeremy Betsa wrote an open letter to the residents addressing concerns about train derailments in Ohio and throughout the nation. His letter talks about hazardous materials being transported through Avon Lake frequently. He explains that the Fire Department does work closely with the large industries and their emergency response teams to handle hazardous materials incidents and it operates with the Lorain County Hazardous Materials Team for response of any incident that involves those types of chemicals. He states, "I do want to assure you that all of our members are trained to an awareness level on hazardous materials and those members who are on the county team are trained at a higher response level. We have our pulse on this current topic and I assure you that the safety of our residents is always paramount. Protection of this community is not only our job but our passion." - Following Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest on the field during a football game, the importance of easily accessible automated external defibrillators, or AEDs has been highlighted. In an effort to keep the schools throughout the state of Ohio safe and ready for anything, Ohio House Bill 462, is proposing that AEDs in schools be mandated. The bill is slated to be reintroduced during this legislative session. According to WKYC.com, "the new law would change the recommendation of AEDs in schools to a requirement, adding sports and recreation facilities to that list."(WKYC.com)
