APPLICATIONS: Monday, October 4, 2021 to Monday, October 11, 2021 applicants may submit application on-line at www.clevelandheights.com and select the appropriate examination.FILING FEE AND RETURN: Application non-refundable filing fee is $35. Once your application has been approved you will be provided with the information to make your on-line payment. You will not be placed on the applicant list until your payment has been received.Â
Copies of supporting documents must be uploaded at time of application. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. To receive bonus points supporting documentation must be uploaded at the time of application. Documents received after the application has been filed will not be considered for bonus points.SALARY:Â

The examination will be conducted with the use of software downloaded to your computer.
Test: Must achieve a grade of 70% or better
Testing will be conducted by Behavioral personnel Assessment Device (BPAD). BPAD provides us with law enforcement video scenarios. Using these critical incidents, you will respond as if you were the officer at the scene. We will gain a behavioral reading of whether you have the judgement and interpersonal competence to represent the values of the City of Cleveland Heights. This is not a test of knowledge; rather it is a test of your interpersonal competence in dealing with different types of people in different job-specific situations.Â
Physical Agility: Only non-certified applicants who have not completed the academy must successfully complete a physical fitness assessment.
Tri-C has a posted test date for Sunday, October 17, 2021. All items must be completed satisfactorily for passage. Cost is $60.00 payable to Tri-C. If you take the exam on this day you must provide a copy to the Civil Service Secretary by 2pm on Monday, October 18, 2021 at asmith@clvhts.com or via fax 216-291-5803.This requirement will be waived for candidates currently enrolled in the academy as the physical assessment for the academy is equivalent to that offered by Tri-C.Any applicant who has already passed the Tri-C physical agility test and have a certificate dated between October 4, 2020 to the final day of application, must upload the certificate with their application.Certified candidates that have successfully completed the Tri-C physical agility test and have a certificate dated between October 4, 2020 and October 17, 2021 may receive (5) bonus points. This is required to be uploaded with the application.QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and not older than 36 years of age at the time of appointment. This is subject to exceptions for Basic Patrol Officers in continued service since August 1, 1997, as per Civil Service Rule III, Sections 2(e).Applicant must be a Citizen of the United States.Certified candidates must be currently employed as a full-time law enforcement officer for at least one year, currently employed as a part-time law enforcement officer (20 hrs/week minimum) for at least two years or currently enrolled in a police academy, or possess a valid OPOTA certification. Applicants will have to complete a form established by the Commission to list prior employers and their full or part-time service dates. This information will be verified at the time of job offer. False information may disqualify a candidate from being employed.Those who are enrolled in the academy at the time of application will be required to successfully pass all requirements and be eligible for certification prior to being appointed. Proof will be in the form of the completion notice from OPOTC.Those who have completed the academy but not yet certified will be required to have completed the academy training within the pre-ceding (12) months of hireTHE POSITION: The Cleveland Heights Police Department wants able, ambitious personnel who desire a worthwhile career in the professional law enforcement field. Based on the opportunity to serve the public, a law enforcement career consists of duties involving preservation of general health, safety and welfare of citizens and property. After receiving thorough training, a Police Officer performs a variety of specific law enforcement assignments.Promotions to higher ranks (Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Chief) are made by competitive examinations from within the Police Department.RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: The eligible applicant for admission to examination for a position in the classified service must reside in one of the following Ohio counties: Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Summit, Geauga or Lake. Proof of residency in one of these counties includes a copy of a utility bill (Water, sewer, gas, or electric only). If no listed utility bill is in the applicant’s name an auto insurance declaration page, showing the applicant as a listed driver, must be provided. The address and applicant’s name must be on the document. No other documents will be accepted. This is required to be uploaded with the application.EDUCATION: Applicants for original appointment to the Classified Service shall be required to have a high school diploma or it’s equivalent.Applicants seeking bonus credit for education achievement must provide proof of degree and or transcripts showing Baccalaureate (3pts) or Graduate (5pts) or Juris Doctor (7pts) degree conferred at the time of application. In no event shall educational credits exceed by any combination a maximum of nine points.OTHER: Must possess a valid State of Ohio drivers or chauffeurs license. A copy of Driver’s license must reflect current address and match the address provided on the application and proof of residency. This is required to be uploaded with the application.Applicants seeking credit for military service must have served at least one year of continuous active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have been honorably discharged or transferred to Reserves. A copy of Form DD214 or similar proof, acceptable to the Civil Service Commission, must be submitted at the same time the application is filed in order to obtain the veteran’s credit of five (5) points for military service. Credit for this bonus will only be given if documentation is uploaded at the time of application. If hired, a copy of form DD214 will be required regardless of bonus points.Applicants shall be credited with additional points equal to 20% of the attained passing grade if the candidate at the time of the examination is then serving as a Cleveland Heights Basic Patrol Officer and has so served for at least six (6) months.No applicant will be given additional points for both military service and police officer service.Successful candidates will have their names placed on an eligibility list from which appointments are made. Additional phases in the hiring process include a Chief’s interview. Following a conditional offer of employment, the candidate must pass a comprehensive medical evaluation by a physician chosen by the City. An applicant will also be required to undergo a psychological assessment and an examination for drug usage. Any applicant whose results from the drug screening examination are determined to be positive shall be rejected unless such results can be satisfactorily related to the advice of a recognized medical practitioner. Prior to a conditional offer a candidate must certify that they have never committed a felony or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude. This will be verified through a background investigation.
