And what better companion to JCU’s commitment to holistic education than an entirely student-run cafe designed to empower the next generation of changemakers.

Saxbys, a Certified B Corp and coffee company headquartered in Philadelphia, understands the endless opportunities for learning outside of midterms and course material. That's why Saxbys is honored to be partnering with JCU to launch The Saxbys Experiential Learning Platform (E.L.P) on campus.

The new cafe, opening on January 18th in the JCU Administration Building, is part of a growing network holding residencies in institutions like St. Joseph’s University, University of Pittsburgh, and Drexel University. Saxbys knows it takes more than its crushable Cold Brew Collection and stacked grilled-cheese menu to become a beloved cafe on campus. It takes teamwork, a drive for community, and magnetic energy from an all-student team helping their fellow students achieve their collegiate goals--whatever and wherever they may be.

The Saxbys E.L.P. redefines what it means to be a cafe, creating a culture that fosters students to run their own impactful business to serve their community. At the cafe's steering wheel are Saxbys' Student Cafe Executive Officers (Student C.E.O.), who runs and manages all aspects of the cafe, from team development and community leadership to managing the entire profit and loss statement. Leading the cafe for JCU are Josh Ruminski ’22, who has led the preparation for the cafe leading up to the Grand Opening & Ian Fields ’23, who will be leading the cafe operation on Grand Opening Day.

As a B Corp, Saxbys' Mission is to Make Life Better and be leaders of cutting-edge initiatives focused on student engagement and empowerment. Ian Fields is doing precisely that as he aims to make Saxbys a cornerstone on JCU’s campus. “As the new Student Cafe Executive Officer, I am extremely excited to improve my leadership, operational, and financial literacy skills. To help make Saxbys a name known on JCU’s campus, I plan on utilizing social media, posting signs around campus, and communicating directly with the student body. I encourage everyone to see what Saxbys has to offer this semester!” says Student C.E.O. Ian Fields.

“I’m excited to Make Life Better on John Carroll’s campus this spring! In an effort to serve myself by serving others, I plan on working with organizations to live out the Jesuit mission to be civic-minded individuals for and with others by partnering with on-campus organizations to fund-raise for various non-profits, organizations, and events” says Student C.E.O. Josh Ruminski.

“We couldn’t imagine a better partner for our first Experiential Learning Platform cafe in Ohio, and we look forward to bringing this dynamic, student-centric experience to John Carroll where students get the one-of-a-kind opportunity to practice civic-minded leadership right on campus” said Saxbys Founder and CEO Nick Bayer.

“We are excited to partner with Saxbys to offer this hands-on, real-world opportunity for our students,” said Dr. Alan Miciak, President of John Carroll University. “This combination of academic and experiential learning will position our students to succeed during their time at JCU and after graduation.”

Join Saxbys this spring semester for the official Grand Opening Event on January 18th between 10:30am-11:30am and a rousing welcome to Ian & Josh as Saxbys' inaugural Student Cafe Executive Officers. Saxbys is honored to be a new presence on campus, providing quality coffee, community leadership, and many study sessions to boot.
