Video: Should Students and Teachers Be Friends on Facebook?

"You Said It!" is a short video featuring people in the community who share their opinion about an issue in town. We ask them to answer one question, then we post a video and ask you to tell us what you think, too.

Should teachers be friends with students on Facebook?

" with my kid on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace or blogs," said Nancy Peppler, school board member. 

While the district has acceptable use policies for e-mailing and texting students, it does not have one for social media because of the many nuances and the inability of school officials to properly enforce it. The policy simply asks teachers not to use social media to communicate with students. 

We spoke to people on Coventry Road Thursday and asked if they thought it was appropriate for teachers and students to be friends on Facebook. We'll post their responses for the next several days. Chime in and tell us what you think.
