📰 News we're reading

1. Vacant home fire in Dayton spreads; residents evacuated (dayton247now.com) — Dayton firefighters say an early-morning blaze at a vacant house on Livingston Avenue spread to two neighboring homes, forcing residents to evacuate but causing no reported injuries. All three houses are uninhabitable for now, the vacant one will be demolished, and the Dayton Fire Department is urging neighbors to report activity in vacant properties and share any information about the fire.

2. Hospitals plan on restricting visitors due to growing illnesses (daytondailynews.com) — Starting Friday, hospitals across the Greater Dayton region will tighten visitor rules because of rising respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, flu and RSV. Anyone who is sick or under 14 will be barred from visiting most patients, and health leaders urge Dayton-area residents to stay home when ill and follow masking and hygiene rules if they do visit.

3. Safe disposal tips for holiday waste in Montgomery County (wdtn.com) — Dayton-area residents are being urged to keep hazardous holiday waste out of regular trash and recycling to prevent fires and explosions. Montgomery County’s Solid Waste District outlines what items need special handling and offers monthly Household Hazardous Waste drop-off hours at the Encrete Lane facility, with clear instructions on how to safely transport materials from home.

4. Thunderbirds salute Dayton Air Show as ‘best' civilian show (daytondailynews.com) — Dayton’s signature CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show has been named the Air Force Thunderbirds’ 2025 “best civilian show site,” highlighting the work of local staff, volunteers, and partners in Dayton and Vandalia. The recognition follows this year’s successful Flight Fest kickoff and comes as organizers prepare for the Navy Blue Angels’ return and the June 13–14, 2026 show at Dayton International Airport.

5. American Bass Anglers Caught With Illegal Bass, Banned From Ontario (wired2fish.com) — A Dayton angler has been fined and banned from fishing in Ontario for a year after being caught with 22 smallmouth bass before the legal season opened. The case is a reminder for local residents planning Canadian fishing trips to carefully check Ontario’s zone-based seasons, limits, and identification rules so an otherwise routine outing doesn’t turn into an expensive legal problem.
