Errant Emergency Siren Wakes Kent Residents

It wasn't their alarm clocks, but instead an emergency siren woke some Kent residents early Tuesday morning.

Residents chatted about hearing the loud, single blast of the siren at about 5:20 a.m. Tuesday and waking to wonder what the possible emergency might be.

Kent Police Chief Michelle Lee explained on the department's Facebook page that the errant siren blast came from one of Kent State University's on-campus warning devices.

"Apparently Kent State University had a glitch in their system and their siren accidentally sounded one round," Lee said. "Normally in an emergency sirens would sound at least three minutes."

One resident of Twin Lakes said he heard the siren blast there — several miles north of Kent and the campus — in a post on the police department's Facebook page.

The siren temporarily perplexed some residents, but it seems most went back to sleep.
