UPDATE: Few Without Power in Kent; High Wind Warning Shortened in NEO

Residents can look forward to quicker relief from the hurricane's reach, which could mean quicker relief from power outages and flooding.

UPDATE 2 p.m.: Mark Durbin, spokesperson for FirstEnergy, said that most customers should have power again by the end of the week, though some areas — especially those close to the lake and west of Interstate 77 will take into the weekend to repair.

He added that the company has adequate resources to handle the outages, though the company is seeking more, with crews from as far as Idaho and Montana coming in to help.

The worst of Hurricane Sandy may be over for Kent-area residents and business owners.

According to FirstEnergy, fewer than five customers were without power in Kent this morning. The power company reports the same number of interruptions for Franklin Township residents.

But the storm isn't without its after-effects.

Kent City Schools canceled classes today, and Kent State University canceled daytime classes. Courses that start after 4:15 p.m. are unaffected and will start as usual.

After Hurricane Sandy pummeled the coast and caused hundreds of thousands of power outages in Northeast Ohio, the National Weather Service shortened the region's high wind warning.

The warning, originally in effect until 4 p.m., now ends at 1 p.m.

A lakeshore flood warning is still in effect until 8 p.m., and lakeside roads — like I-90 — are plagued with closures and backups due to high water.

A flood watch for all of Northeast Ohio is still in effect until this evening.
