Earthquake Shakes Mentor, Northeast Ohio

Reports of shaking ground began trickling in at 8:30 a.m.

MENTOR, OH — An earthquake shook parts of Northeast Ohio on Tuesday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the 2.7-magnitude earthquake approximately 20 minutes after the shaking was first reported. The quake originated in Timberlake and was felt in surrounding communities like Mentor, Eastlake and Willowick.

According to the Survey, the quake could be felt throughout much of Lake County. Dozens of reports of the quake rolled in only 20 minutes after it was first felt, according to the Survey's reporting website.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources also confirmed the earthquake this morning, but had not yet mapped out its magnitude.

The largest earthquake in Ohio history is believed to have hit 5.4 magnitude, Ohio History Central said. That quake hit the western portion of the state in 1937. Since recording began, Ohio has had more than 200 earthquakes that were at least 2.0 in magnitude.
