Lawnfield, Library Continue Civil War Series With Battle Of Stone's River

James A. Garfield National Historic Site and Mentor Public Library will continue their series of lunchtime talks on the major battles of the Civil War with "The Battle of Stone's River" at noon today.

The Stone's River campaign (also known as the battle of Murfreesboro) was fought from December 1862 to January 1863.

It was an important conflict in the western theater.

Of the major battles of the Civil War, Stones River had the highest percentage of casualties for both the Union and Confederacy. And, while neither side truly won the battle, it boosted the Union's morale to force a Confederate withdrawal after the defeat at The Battle of Fredericksburg.

Park volunteer Dan Vermilya will be the featured speaker.

Guests may bring a lunch to enjoy during the talk.

The library and park's joint series coincides with the park's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

The series will continue Dec. 12 when the Battle of Fredericksburg will be the subject.
