Last week's fire will only cause a small delay for the gourmet grilled cheese maker

The bad news is the small fire in the Mentor Melt building last Thursday will delay the restaurant's opening.

The good news is the delay will be a short one.

"This small setback shouldn’t have a significant impact on our opening and we are currently working with the city of Mentor and the building inspectors to open the Mentor location on November 2, said Melt owner Matt Fish in a statement.

"We know the Mentor community and our new Melt family members are anxious to get the doors open and so are we. So we want to send a huge thank you out to the Mentor Fire and Police Departments and other firefighters for their quick response, as well as to all of our fans for your continued support."

The fire began in the kitchen area shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, while renovations were taking place at the restaurant.

The fire spread through the duct work to the ceiling, causing smoke to come from the roof, but firefighters were able to contain the flames to the Melt unit in the shopping complex.

Mentor, Kirtland and Willoughby Fire Departments extinguished the the fire, while firefighters from Grand River, Concord Township and Mentor-on-the-Lake covered Mentor's unmanned stations.

Damage to the building was limited and no one was hurt.

The Mentor Melt will be located in the Points East shopping plaza at 7289 Mentor Avenue, the former home of Jalapeño Loco.

This is the gourmet grilled cheese maker's fourth location.

Melt, in addition to adding a destination restaurant to the city, will also create about 50 jobs in Mentor.
