We’ve started a new club at our Mentor-on-the-Lake Branch that celebrates and investigates the history of Mentor-on-the-Lake! The first meeting of the Mentor-on-the-Lake History Buffs will be 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

Lisa Layton, the MPL associate who started the group, said she got the idea from our patrons who reminisce about the area when they visit us.

“Patrons come in and ask about local history, especially in the summer,” Lisa said. “They stop in and reminisce about the beautiful beach and resort town of its day. They talk about Mentor Beach Playland, Salida Hotel and dance hall. One man told me he was a drummer who filled in at the dance hall there. He said that Lana Turner took him by the hand and led him onto the stage. His eyes lit up when he told the story. He took me back there.”

Lisa loves these little reminiscences and is forming a new group to both remember and research Mentor-on-the-Lake’s rich history.

“Local residents have a story to tell about their history,” Layton said. “It’s time to pull out the boxes of old photos and take a trip down memory lane before the story is no longer there to share.

The group is open to all, and we only ask that people RSVP to join the discussion. You can sign up online or by calling us at 440-257-2512.
