Shaker Heights High Science Olympiad Team Advances To State Tournament

The Shaker Heights High School Science Olympiad team has earned a berth in the State Science Olympiad Tournament, according to the Shaker Schools web site.

It was one of only six teams to advance from the Case Western Reserve University Regional Science Olympiad Tournament on February 23.

The state tournament will be held at The Ohio State University in April.

The Science Olympiad competition consists of almost two dozen events that test the students' acumen in science, technology and engineering.

The following Shaker students won medals for finishing in the top five in their event categories at the regional tournament:

First Place: Sameer Apte, Vishi Betapudi, Jacob Gardner and Mia Wang
Second Place: Leo Izen, Alex Maytin, Kai Smith, Anno van den Akker and Ezra Zigmond 
Third Place: Linda Fan, Kerstin Niedermaier and Mia Wang
Fourth Place: Ryan LaMonica and Alex Maytin
Fifth Place: Alex Cullina and Joshua Schultheiss
 
High School science teachers Travis Cox, Joe Marencik, John Moore and John O’Verko coach the team. 

While the high school team was competing, Shaker Heights Middle School students also participated that day in their regional Science Olympiad Tournament and brought home several honors.

The following Shaker students won medals for finishing in the top five in their event categories:

First place: Maria Suresh and Jocelyn Ting
Third place: Krysta Aulak and Alula Hunsen
Fifth place: Blake Himes and Vishnu Kasturi

Middle School teachers Jeremy Bishko, Mark Nagal, Chris Oryl, Mike Schwenn, and Dave Strauch coach the Middle School Science Olympiad team.
