Shaker Heights Students Excel At Ohio History Day
More than 30 of the 47 Shaker students who participated in 26 different projects at Ohio History Day were recognized as national finalists, alternates or honorable mentions

The students Shaker Heights Middle School and High School continued to prove their historical acumen at Ohio History Day.
Overall, 33 of the 47 Shaker students who participated in 26 different projects at Ohio History Day were recognized as national finalists, alternates or honorable mentions.
Ohio History Day is part of the National History Day competition in which students perform extensive research to develop an original thesis and demonstrate their knowledge and conclusions about a specific historical theme.

This year’s theme was “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.”
The final projects of students -- who could work by themselves or in groups -- included documentary videos, dramatic performances and formal term papers.

At the state level, 12 of the district's 26 projects were awarded National Finalist status, two were named National Alternates and two were given Honorable Mentions, according to the Shaker Schools web site.
The National Finalists are eligible to compete in the National History Day finals in June at the University of Maryland, College Park.
All totalled, Shaker students locked up two-thirds of the state's available slots for nationals.
Six Shaker Heights High School students were recognized for their work at last year's National History Day.
