Shaker Lakes Is Celebrating Earth Day With Bevy Of Events

Learn more about local bird species, help clean up the park and celebrate the Earth this weekend at Shaker Lakes

The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is celebrating Earth Day this year with a wide range of environmental events beginning this weekend through Monday, April 22.

Weekend activities begin with an artist’s reception 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. this Friday for Laura Gooch, avid photographer, bird watcher and author of The Doan Brook Handbook.

Visitors can meet Laura and view her stunning collection of colorful photographs in her show titled “Birds, Bugs and Beasts from Cleveland to the Galapagos.”

This event is free and refreshments will be served.

Then, the annual Doan Brook Stream Sweep and Weed Pull will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Volunteers can meet in the Friends Pavilion to organize the cleanup of winter’s accumulation of trash in the Doan Brook upper corridor and pull the invasive garlic mustard on the Nature Center grounds.

You can volunteer as an individual or as a group and all ages are welcome. Call (216) 321-5935, ext. 244 to register.

Furthermore, the Nature Center will host an electronics recycling opportunity all Saturday and Sunday.

Peoplle can drop off old computers and electronics, except for TVs, into the boxes located in the Friends Pavilion for recycling any time between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. those days.

Finally, the deadline to order plants from the 31st annual Nature Center Plant Sale Pre-Order Catalog has been extended to Monday.

The Plant Sale catalogs, with plant photos, descriptions and order forms, are available at the Nature Center and on its website. All pre-orders include home delivery on Wednesday, May 8, for a small fee.
