Wrong-Way Driver Endangers Cars On I-90: Westlake Police

The driver admitted to drinking but refused to take a breath test, police said.

WESTLAKE, OH β€” A wrong-way driver endangered cars on I-90 during the final days of February, Westlake police announced.

Officers dealt with two alcohol-fueled incidents on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27, according to reports released by Westlake Police Department. Details on both incidents are below.

OVI, Feb. 26 β€” Several 911 callers reported seeing an erratic car going the wrong way on I-90, near Crocker Road at 5:15 a.m. on Feb. 26. Westlake and Rocky River police converged on the scene and spotted a Ford Fusion going east, in the westbound lanes. The driver of the wrong-way car saw police lights and pulled over.

The drier was a 36-year-old North Ridgeville man. He had difficulty stopping his car on the side of the highway, police said, and he was unsteady on his feet when stepped out of the Fusion. Police said he admitted to drinking, but did not realize he was on the wrong side of the highway. He refused to take field or breath tests and was taken into custody for operating a vehicle impaired. He was then taken to Westlake Jail.

Disorderly Conduct, Feb. 27 β€” Westlake firefighters needed help dealing with a 50-year-old man who had been outside of Time Warp Bar since the evening of Feb. 26, police said. Officers arrived at 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 27 and noted that the man appeared intoxicated. The 50-year-old said he was looking for his car, but it was missing. Officers found the man's car parked across the street, according to reports.

Officers and firefighters offered to have the man taken to the hospital for an evaluation, but he refused, police said. The man was then taken into custody for disorderly conduct while intoxicated. He was taken to Westlake Jail to wait for someone sober to pick him up, police said.
