The day that started the World War for the U.S.A.

December 7, 1941 is the day that Japanese forces attacked U.S. soil with hundreds of fighter planes. In the end they were able to destroy or damage twenty Navy vessels, which included eight battleships and over 300 planes. More than 2,400 Americans died, including civilians, and injuring hundreds more. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the day after the attack, declared war and joined the Allied efforts for World War II. In his speech to the citizens across the country, President Roosevelt declared that this would be “a date which will live in infamy,” and that “this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.” It would take two more years before the U.S. fully joined the war efforts overseas.

Pearl Harbor is located near Honolulu, Hawaii. One of the battleships, the USS Arizona, in fact houses a national memorial for those who were killed on that day in history. This year will mark the 80th anniversary of that faithful day.

Jenni Hemphill is the current Assistant Supervisor for the Boardman, Springfield, and Greenford locations. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education (K-12) in 2001 and a Master’s of Library and Information Science plus K-12 degree in 2015, both from Kent State University. She taught at the Ohio School for the Deaf for ten years, where she taught all ages, and has been a contract interpreter for the deaf locally.

She started at PLYMC back in 2014 and loves helping patrons, of any age, find their next best read, and going out into the community to schools for off-site programming. She currently runs the ASL Club Program for PLYMC.

Her and her husband have two children, who attend Springfield Local Schools. She loves to read, spend time with family, and trying new things.
