Oklahoma City is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Oklahoma City has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • The city has a rich history, and one of its most famous events was the Land Run of 1889, when people from all over the country rushed to claim land in the newly opened territory. Today, visitors can still see markers and monuments around the city that commemorate this exciting time in Oklahoma's past.
  • Oklahoma City is home to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, which is America’s premier institution of Western history, art and culture. Here you can explore the history of the American West, including cowboy culture, Native American art and artifacts and even see a replica of a frontier town.
  • If you're a fan of architecture, you'll love the Art Deco buildings scattered throughout Oklahoma City's downtown. The city was a boom town in the 1920s and 1930s, and many of the buildings constructed during that time reflect the Art Deco style that was popular at the time. Be sure to check out the historic Skirvin Hotel, which was recently restored to its former glory.
  • If you're looking for a fun outdoor activity, check out the Oklahoma River. The river winds through the city and offers kayaking, paddleboarding and even a zip line that will take you across the water. And if you're not feeling quite so adventurous, you can still enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride along the river's scenic trails.
  • Did you know that Oklahoma City is home to the American Banjo Museum? This unique museum showcases the history and evolution of the banjo, including its roots in Africa, its popularity in American folk music and its influence on modern music genres. Visitors can even try playing the banjo themselves!
