Dutch Bros Aims For $1M In Donations For MDA

The Drink One for Dane fundraiser sees Dutch Bros annually donate all sales proceeds on May 11 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Dutch Bros coffee company believes its loyal customers across seven states can help it raise $1 million this month to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Drink One for Dane fundraiser, now in its 12th year, sees Dutch Bros annually donate all proceeds collected from sales at more than 300 stores on May 11 to support the MDA's work researching amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and supporting family services for those affected by the rare nervous system disease.

"We absolutely love our customers, and they have amazed us with their growing generosity each year for this campaign," Dutch Bros Coffee co-founder Travis Boersma said in a statement. “Held in honor of my brother Dane, who co-founded Dutch Bros with me, this event encapsulates his spirit, which remains a guiding force for Dutch Bros. We are truly moved by how our communities continue to embrace his legacy and all those impacted by ALS."

Dane Boersma was diagnosed with ALS in 2007. Shortly afterward, the company began its annual fundraiser not only to increase ALS awareness but also to support families who are living with those afflicted by the illness.

Dane passed away in 2009, but the company continued its fundraiser "as a testament to his indomitable spirit and inspiring positive attitude," Dutch Bros officials said.

In May 2017, Dutch Bros customers at 283 coffee stands raised more than $970,000 for the MDA. With even more shops open this year, Dutch Bros expects to exceed last year's numbers — further assisting MDA, the world's leader in the fight against muscle-debilitating diseases like ALS, continue its mission.

“In nearly 70 years, MDA has spent $350 million funding ALS research and care support services. With partners like Dutch Bros, the fruits of our labor are starting to pay off with two FDA-approved treatments for ALS and the development and testing of promising new therapies,” said MDA president and CEO Lynn O’Connor Vos. “We know there is still much work to be done in unlocking the secrets of this disease, but we’ll continue to aim to stop ALS in its tracks.”

Through various fundraisers and community events held each year, Dutch Bros reportedly donates more than $2 million to numerous nonprofits around the country.
