Police Declare Riot At Portland ICE Facility: Authorities

One federal officer was reported injured but did not need medical treatment, police say.

PORTLAND, OR — A riot was declared during a protest outside the U.S. ICE facility in Portland Saturday, with one person arrested and charged with assault on a peace officer, police said.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, any use of less lethal has been done by federal officers, not local authorities.

One federal officer was reported injured, but when Portland Fire & Rescue checked, that individual did not need treatment, police said.

A first message from police, posted on X, said: "To those near S Moody and S Bancroft, this has been declared a riot. The area near S Moody and S Bancroft is now closed. All persons must immediately leave the area by traveling to the north."

Protesters were told to obey all laws and pedestrian control devices and to disperse immediately.

"Failure to adhere to this order may subject you to citation or arrest. If necessary, crowd control measures, including impact munitions or other physical force, may also be used if justified by law."

According to opb.org, protesters used objects to break through a door at the facility, which has been the site of numerous protests; federal officers "shot crowd control munitions from the roof and from a driveway entrance to the facility," opb.org said. Police did not confirm that report.

Portland police said that a "medical event" was reported within the facility. "Medical personnel will be entering. Please move away from the entrance and do not interfere with police or medical during the process, or force may be used against you," the X message read.

Police also said that they have observed criminal activity, "including assault and criminal mischief and will be making targeted arrests. Do not interfere with police action. Failure to adhere to this order may subject you to citation or arrest. If necessary, crowd control measures, including impact munitions or other physical force may also be used if justified by law."
