5 Halloween Safety Tips from the Hillsboro Police
Patch talks to sergeant Alex Oh, officer of youth services for the Hillsboro PD, about keeping Halloween safe and fun.

Happy Halloween, Hillsboro. If you decide to venture out this Halloween, and trick-or-treating is on your list of things to do, make sure you're doing so safely. The Hillsboro Police Department provided some useful tips for staying safe this Halloween.
The recommended hours for trick-or-treating are 5-8 p.m.
- Trick-or-Treating: Do so in your neighborhood and in areas that are familiar. The department encourages adults to be present during trick-or-treating, to stay close and to watch the kids as they approach unfamiliar houses. Instruct children not to eat any candy until returning at the end of the night, and not to enter strangers houses.
- Costumes: Wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight in order to be seen by motorists. In the same vein, drivers operating vehicles should be wary of children. If the kiddos decide to wear makeup as part of their costume, make sure to remove all of it before they go to bed to avoid irritation of the eyes and skin.
- Candy: Accept only wrapped candy unless its coming from a family member or a well-known neighbor. Adults, make sure to examine the candy collected beforehand.
- Families: Homeowners, be sure the outside of your property is well-lit, all outside lights are turned on and any animals are secured.
- Transportation: If you're operating a car or another kind of vehicle on Halloween night, be wary of kids going door to door. Be sure to enter and exit driveways carefully. As the night progresses and it starts to get darker, drivers, pay special attention to kids dressed in dark clothing.
Have a safe and happy Halloween, Hillsboro.
