5 Abington Nonprofits To Support This Holiday Season

With the giving season nearly here, Patch readers should check out some of these local non-profit groups while considering local donations.

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — If you’re like many of your Abington Township neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Abington Township areas.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  1. Briar Brush Nature Center —The mission of Briar Bush Nature Center is " to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to explore and protect nature by encouraging curiosity and scientific inquiry." They accomplish this through their nature center, on and off-site educational programming, summer camps, events, and more.
  2. Abington Township Free Library —The Abington Township Free Library has hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. With two branches, thousands of books, and hundreds of programs, volunteers play a critical role in providing professional services and providing a welcoming atmosphere for all.
  3. Keswick Village Business Association —The Keswick Village Business Association promotes Keswick Village through community events, local partnerships, and communication.
  4. Abington Township Fire Department —The Abington Township Fire Department is an all-volunteer fire department comprised of five fire stations. The ATFD is continuously looking for members of the community who can donate their time to better serve our community.
  5. Abington Police Athletic League —Since its inception, Abington PAL has been offering members a wide variety of opportunities under the mentorship of caring adults. Many young people who come to Abington PAL have not been exposed to the typical array of club sports, arts programs, group games, and the like. So Abington PAL aims to provide a wide variety of options for boys and girls to sample and develop their interests and skills.
