Abington Fire Department Offers Up Hands-On Learning
The Abington Fire Department holds its annual Student Learning Day program for Abington High School students.
The Abington Fire Department held its annual Service Learning Day program for Abington Senior High School students at its training facility last Friday.
The event is aimed at teaching students the importance of community involvement and allows the fire department the chance to recruit young people to volunteer as fire fighters.
About 30 students participated. The students had the opportunity to operate fire hoses to knock down traffic cones, use fire extinguishers to put out controlled fires and suit up with helmets, boots, jackets and other firefighting gear before heading into the department’s training facility that was filled with non-toxic smoke.

Abington Senior High School teacher Gary Wiley said the annual event is a chance for students to explore the different community service opportunities.
“Firefighting is the ultimate selfless dedication to the community because you are going above and beyond the call of duty to protect others in need,” Wiley said.
