Abington Graduates

Last night, 560 Abington Senior High School students moved on.

Abington High School seniors took one last lap around the track at Schwarzman Stadium last night — and Abington School Board President Raymond McGarry and Superintendent Amy Sichel met them at the finish line with diplomas.

In typical Abington fashion, students walked down the hill from the high school and into the stadium accompanied by faculty, alumni and live music from the band.

Garnering a lot of laughs was class speaker Christopher Ruhl. He said three things got him through his academic career at Abington: “Seinfeld,” food and water.

Ruhl said when he learned that he would be speaking to his classmates during graduation he hit up Google and Twitter to find some popular graduation quotes. Not finding any of the quotes from celebrities and dead poets fitting, he said, “It’s my time.” He told his fellow students to live in the present and to not have any regrets.

Abington Senior High School Principal Jeffrey Fecher said the Class of 2012 helped him “stay true to his values.” He said the class was dedicated to innovation and left its mark on the school.

“No one said, ‘That’s just the way we’ve always done things,’” Fecher said.

The ceremony was pushed back a day because of heavy rain on Tuesday night.

Also of note: the students did “the wave” prior to McGarry’s speech, several beach balls were confiscated, hats were thrown, and the class was awarded more than $5 million in scholarships.
