Congregation Kol Ami of Elkins Park will host a presentation titled, "Why Jews Love Baseball" on March 15, 2024 at 8:15 p.m. The presentation will take place in Congregation Kol Ami’s Bornstein Auditorium, located at 8231 Old York Road Elkins Park, PA, and via Zoom. The presentation is open to the public and is free to attend.

The presentation will be moderated by Alan Wolstetter, a Kol Ami member who has always been fascinated by the history of baseball and has been collecting baseball stories since high school. Featured panelists will include:

  • Ira Cooperman, a Baseball Hall of Fame member since 2005 and a writer who has given several presentations at the Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture.
  • Stan Salkin, a baseball history fan for most of his life and a firm believer that there is always a chance for a rally in the bottom of the 9th.

Since the early 1900’s, Jews have been attracted to baseball, both as a past-time and as a way to assimilate into American culture. “Why Jews Love Baseball” will cover topics such as “Should Hank Greenberg have played on Rosh Hashanah?” and whether Pete Rose should be permitted entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In addition, a collection of vintage baseball cards will be on display, courtesy of Andrew Salkin, and Cracker Jacks will be available for attendees.

“As winter turns to spring, many people start think about baseball. So, we are very pleased to be able to present program about Jews and baseball,” said Alan Wohlstetter, Kol Ami membership chair and organizer of the event. “I’m sure this presentation will be a home run for all who attend.”
