Patch posed several questions to candidates regarding their positions on the local and national front:
1. What is your position on the proposal for a new middle school?
I am strongly in favor of the referendum to replace our middle school with a functional facility that is equipped for learning in the 21st century. There are several factors that influence this decision including increased capacity, enhanced facilities for modern learning, curriculum expansion, and overall student health and well-being.
A new middle school will alleviate overcrowding that exists in the existing school, while providing a cohesive, comfortable, safe learning environment. Enhancing facilities and curriculum expansion will benefit students by allowing for technology upgrades that will allow educators to continue to meet students' needs.
A well-designed school environment will promote mental and emotional well-being. This process has been underway for 2+ years with much input from the community, the educators, and the board and I encourage you to "Vote Yes to Invest" in the new middle school. I agree that no one wants higher taxes, but delaying this decision will only result in financial strain to the budget in the future.
2. How will cuts to the federal Department of Education impact local school districts?
The impact of this will be felt deeply. The funding from the federal government covers part of the expenses for programming for our most vulnerable populations, including students with additional learning support, low-income households, and multilingual homes. Cuts to the federal Department of Education will ripple through local schools, affecting staffing, funding of these critical programs, and ultimately the quality of education provided to the students.
3. What education background will you bring to the position?
As an engineer, scientist, and team leader for over 20 years, I can provide curriculum support, mentorship opportunities, and collaboration with industry. I make data-driven decisions as well as balance a complex budget and prioritize every day. I lead global cross-functional teams with a servant leader mindset. I am active in the local community through the Abington Band Association and my church.
As well as broader service through non-profits such as One House at a Time and The Everywhere Project. These transferable skills can aid the board in decisions regarding budgeting and resource allocation as well as balancing the needs of educators, teachers, and the community.
4. What are the biggest challenges for the school district in the future?
Managing and navigating future budget challenges. The future financial challenges facing school districts in light of potential changes in funding will require a creative, collaborative, and strategic approach.
