The Abington Senior High School chess team cleans up in Minneapolis.

 

The Abington School Board honored the Abington Senior High School Chess team at its meeting earlier this week.

The chess team won this year’s Under 1200 National Title Chess Championship in Minneapolis. The tournament took place April 13, 14 and 15.

The team includes:

  • Chess team coach and Abington Senior High School English teacher Shawn Simmons
  • Captain for the last three years Lucas Henigan
  • Seniors Andrew Weinrich, Bardia Jahanshahi and Chris Brown
  • Juniors William Giguere, Eric Goldsborough, Ben Kruger and Ryan Klasky 
  • Sophomore Aidan McLaughlin 

Giguere is the 2011 State Champion in the Under 1300 bracket; Goldsborough placed eighth at Nationals in the Under 1200 bracket; Kruger placed 18th at Nationals in the Under 1200 bracket; Klasky finished 30th at Nationals in the Under 1200 bracket; and McLaughlin placed 30th in the unrated section.

Simmons said chess players compete for ratings to fit inside a certain bracket.

Speaking to the school board, Simmons thanked the families, teachers, and administration for their support on behalf of the team.
