Looking Ahead 2026: New Townhomes, Schools Superintendent In Eastern Montco

The new year means big plans for many communities in eastern Montgomery County.

EASTERN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — School superintendent hirings, middle school plans, new government leaders, and several key projects highlight what's coming up in eastern Montgomery County in 2026.

Here are some of the things to look forward to in eastern Montgomery County communities in 2026:

Government Changes

The Horsham Township Council will look a lot different next year.

The Democratic Party swept the November general election by winning three council seats from Republicans, who had a stronghold on the board for years. Now the Democrats will hold all five council seats.

Meanwhile, the Hatboro Borough Council will elect a new president and vice president at its reorganization meeting on Jan. 5.

School District Plans

The Abington School District is working on plans for a new middle school approved by voters in a May 2025 primary election special referendum. The district is currently seeking community feedback on the project.

The Jenkintown School District has begun its search for its next superintendent. The school district is seeking community feedback on the qualities needed for the district's next leader to replace Schools Superintendent Jill Takacs, who is retiring at the end of the year.

New Businesses

Hatboro welcomed 16 new businesses in 2025. Will it top that amount in 2026 with two new apartment complexes in the heart of the York Road Business District?

The Noble Town Center in Abington Township continues its rebirth with plans for more tenants in 2026 and the addition of a Barnes & Noble book store at some point.

Townhome / Apartment Projects

In the Maple Glen Triangle that separates Upper Dublin Township and Horsham Township, two major townhome construction projects are progressing.

On one side of the Triangle, a townhome project is moving along behind the Key Bank on Norristown Road in Horsham Township. Meanwhile, work has started on another townhome project in which a 2021 tornado wiped out an area of trees in Upper Dublin Township.

In Hatboro, after one apartment complex opened on York Road, another one is nearing completion on the north side of the borough's major roadway.

Navy Base Development

Now that Horsham Township Council has acquired 118 acres of the former Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base on Route 611, how will the property be developed, and will the township get more land in a transfer in the following year.

Road Projects

The long-anticipated West Moreland Avenue Bridge replacement projectis expected to begin next month. The bridge work is being overseen by Montgomery County.

Sections of two key Cheltenham Township roads will be closed for seven months. PennDOT said the roadway construction will close westbound Route 73 (Church Road) and southbound Greenwood Avenue through July 2026.
