Scott Bonagura, PSCA COY chairman, said the criteria for the honor "is very demanding."

"The coach must demonstrate knowledge of the game through the understanding of the rules and have developed a sound coaching philosophy," he said. "They must have established good rapport with the team, officials, and other coaches. Their conduct, as well as the conduct of the team, must represent the highest ideals of the game. They must also have exhibited involvement outside their high school program and be recognized by fellow coaches."
