ABINGTON, PA — Local police are telling homeowners to be vigilant after a handful of reports recently involving residential burglaries.

The Abington Township Police Department said that five homes were broken into in the eastern part of the township between late April and early May, and that the burglaries occurred during the late morning and early afternoon hours.

The handful of burglaries took place at homes in the Huntingdon Valley, Rydal and Jenkintown sections of the township.

Investigators are saying that the burglars appear to be targeting homes that are unoccupied, and that the suspects often knock on doors to see if anyone is home at the time.

If residents are home, police said, the suspects will act like they are from either home repair companies seeking business or inquiring about a CraigsList sale or other online exchange.

"If an unknown suspicious person knocks on your door, do not answer the door," Abington Police said in a Facebook post. "Yell out that you are busy right now so that they know somebody is home. Call 9-1-1 and an officer will respond to investigate."

Police said that if residents are home at the time the suspects knock on a door, the suspects will often leave the area and search for another target elsewhere.
