Sinkhole In Cheltenham Causes Emergency Road Closure

Police are warning drivers to adhere to road closure signs as some motorists have been ignoring warnings and driving around safety barriers.

CHELTENHAM, PA — Emergency officials announced a road closure in Cheltenham Township due to a dangerous sinkhole, and township officials are now warning drivers that they could be fined if they evade safety barriers that were put in place to close the roads.

The sinkhole occurred in the area of Chelten Hills Drive and Old York Road on Monday, and emergency management personnel said that Jersey Barriers were installed to keep motorists from driving in the area.

The township said it was unsure how long the closure would be in place.

Then, on Tuesday, township officials posted on social media that some drivers were navigating around the barriers, which were put in place to close the stretch of roadway from Rodgers Road to Church Road, and they warned drivers to cease evading the safety barriers since it's against the law and could lead to the issuing of fines.

"Please for your safety and ours, do not go around the barricades," Cheltenham Township Emergency Management posted on social media.
