Student Gov. Day at Abington Fire Co.

As part of Student Government Day April 18, students from Abington Senior High School’s AP government and social studies classes were invited to spend the day with township agencies, including the courts, the police department and the public works department.

The students also stopped by Abington Fire Co.

Abington Fire Department Community Service Specialist Jeffrey Glynn gave students an overview on fire hazards, such as lack of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, leaving stoves unattended while cooking and improperly disposing of fireplace ashes. Glynn also told the students that the need for volunteer firefighters has increased over the past several years, which will create an influx of emergency services careers in the next decade.

Following the presentation, Abington Fire Co. member Robert Woodard showed students firefighting tools, such as the Jaws of Life and breathing equipment that firefighters wear when they enter a smoky environment.

Abington High School social studies teacher Kevin Conlin said that Student Government Day is an ideal way for students to learn more about the township and offers them a way to get involved in their community.

“It is important to have our students understand the function of local government and why it needs to operate efficiently and effectively,” Conlin said.
