12 Killed In Independence Day Weekend Crashes Across PA: State Police

While a dozen people died in nine crashes over the holiday weekend, none of those crashes involved driving under the influence, police said.

PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania State Police released crash and traffic enforcement data from Independence Day weekend, and reported several fatal crashes.

According to state police, July 3 through July 6 saw 803 total crashes, down from 944 in 2024's holiday weekend.

Of those 803 crashes, nine were fatal. And in those nine crashes, 12 people died.

Authorities said these crashes occurred in Todd Township, Huntingdon County; Portage Township, Cambria County; West Mead Township, Crawford County; Henderson Township, Huntingdon County; Liberty Township, Centre County; Carroll Township, Perry County; Hazle Township, Luzerne County; Roaring Brook Township, Lackawanna County; and Fairview Township, Mercer County.

The same number of people died in crashes over the holiday period last year, according to police.

Fifty-eight of the 803 crashes involved driving under the influence. Luckily, none of those crashes resulted in fatalities, police said. In 2024, the holiday weekend saw five fatal DUI-related crashes.

State police also made 458 DUI arrests from July 3 to July 6, which is lower than the 541 DUI arrests in 2024.

In total, 156 people were hurt in all the crashes, down from the 197 injured in 2024.

State police also issued 5,790 speeding citations, 131 child seat citations, 634 seatbelt citations, and 14,596 other citations.

Authorities also made 150 drug-related arrests over the same period.
