911 Service Restored In PA Following Outage

The statewide outage was first reported Friday afternoon.

Pennsylvanians can once again call 911 following a statewide outage that was first reported Friday afternoon, according to the state officials.

The issue was first noticed around 2 p.m. Friday, prompting authorities to issue a statewide emergency alert. Service was restored around midnight, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency said.

In a statement, the agency said it will continue to investigate the incident.

"We worked with counties to fully test that the system is operational," PEMA said. "Please do not call 911 for testing purposes; leave lines open for true emergencies."

According to a CBS Philadelphia report, the outage was caused by an IT issue with a third-party company contracted through the PEMA. Agency director Randy Padfield said it's too early to determine what caused the problem, but it could be a software or hardware issue.
