HARRISBURG, PA — The man who authorities said broke into Gov. Shapiro's mansion in Harrisburg over the weekend and set it on fire has been taken to the hospital following a "medical event," according to officials.

Cody Balmer, 38, is suffering from an unknown ailment "not connected to this incident or his arrest," Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement.

Balmer was taken from Dauphin County Prison to a nearby hospital for treatment. He is being supervised by state police while at the hospital and will be returned to the prison once the hospital releases him, troopers said.

State police said that Balmer turned himself in without incident on Sunday, hours after he climbed a fence, broke into the governor's mansion, and threw several Heineken bottles filled with gasoline around the home.

He's been charged with attempted murder, aggravated arson, burglary, terrorism, and related counts. His arraignment, which had been set for Monday, has been postponed until his release from the hospital.

No one was injured in the attack, which seems to have been motivated by Balmer's admitted "hate" for Shapiro, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Shapiro and his family and staff were inside the mansion when Balmer broke in and started the fire. The blaze was mostly contained to a wing of the mansion separate from where they were sleeping, however, and they were awoken by state police banging on the door at around 2 a.m. Sunday.

Shapiro had been celebrating the Jewish holiday of Passover with his family and guests hours before the arson on Saturday night.
