The Manhunt For Danelo Cavalcante: See Full Timeline

EASTERN PA — As the search for escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante nears the two week mark, authorities in southeastern Pennsylvania have assembled a massive, interagency team unprecedented in recent regional history.

Cavalcante, a Brazilian national, was convicted on Aug. 16 of first-degree murder in the April 18, 2021 stabbing of his former girlfriend Deborah Brandao.

Day 1, Aug. 31

Danelo Cavalcante, escapes from Chester County prison at 8:50 a.m. by "crabwalking" up a wall to the roof and somehow making his way through a razor wire fence. Authorities have not released further details on exactly how Cavalcante managed to get through the fencing or up the wall, particularly as it was the second escape of this kind from the prison. He is spotted at 9:40 a.m. walking southbound on Wawaset Road outside Pocopson Township. See more.

Day 2, Sept. 1

Police believe he is still in the Chester County area. West Chester University cancels classes. See more.

Day 3, Sept. 2

A $10,000 bounty is placed on Cavalcante's head as the search over the weekend proves fruitless. He is spotted shortly before 1:45 a.m. on the 1800 block of Lenape Road, about 1.5 miles from the prison. See more.

Days 4-5, Sept. 3-4

His mother pleads with him to surrender. Cavalcante slips through a police perimeter near Baltimore Pike, and the perimeter shifts. See more.

Day 6, Sept. 5

Police explain superficial details of Cavalcante's escape, including releasing, for the first time, the footage of him crabwalking up the walls. A grid is placed around Longwood Gardens, where he is believed to be located. Longwood Gardens, Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, Kennett Consolidated School District, and Kennett Square Borough Hall are locked down. See more.

Day 7, Sept. 6

Day 8, Sept. 7

Cavalcante was spotted again near Longwood Gardens just before noon. Perimeter of eight square miles is established, bounded by Routes 926 and 52, and Creek Road and Hillendale Road in southern Chester County. See more.

Day 10, Sept. 9

Clean shaven and wearing a white sweatshirt, police release new security camera footage showing Cavalcante's new look. He is spotted near Phoenixville in a stolen white 2020 Ford van. See more.

The van stolen by Danelo Cavalcante is recovered in Chester County. Cavalcante tries to contact two people he knows, but is unsuccessful. See more.

The search grows to hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the region and nation, and includes the U.S. Marshal's office, FBI, and Border Patrol, along with local police. No new sightings are reported. See more.
